WHYSQUAT Drawing inspiration from the 'sento', of Japanese public bath, Whysquat was created from a single piece of timber. The idea was that it had to be done in the simplest manner possible. Making a stool this narrow had its challenges, and posed its own questions, such as 'Will it break?' or 'Will it topple over?'. Making a regular width stool would have solved this problem, but this was created to minimize the space it will take in a small bathroom. When placed against the wall, it shouldn't be an obstruction, it should be part of the bathroom, not another item in the bathroom.
So the solution was simple. Use traditional joints instead of nails, and only use the best tropical heavy hardwood available. Balau / Selangan batu planks provide the ideal weight, strength, and rigidity for this three-piece structure, while the properties of this species enable it to have a high resistance to water. Edges are meticulously sanded down to ensure comfort, and a light custom coating of varnish ensures that it will age the timber beautifully. Indeed, if you have something like this, Whysquat? |
